'No mobiles' to replace 'no smoking' signs on planes

"No mobile" signs are to replace the outdated "no smoking" signs above airline seats with the introduction of in-flight mobile phone services in Europe next year.

Air France will be the first airline to trial the satellite-based technology early next year, followed by the UK's BMI and Portugal's TAP.

The technology, developed by Airbus and Sita joint venture OnAir, will allow passengers to make in-flight mobile calls and send text messages on short-haul flights across Europe at a cost of around $2.50 per minute.

The overhead "no mobile" signs will be retrofitted to old aircraft and fitted to new Airbus planes coming off the production line, which will be used by airlines to provide the in-flight mobile phone service.

The illuminated "no smoking" signs have now become outdated since almost universal bans on lighting up on scheduled passenger planes were introduced in the late 1990s.

The "no mobile" sign will show a mobile phone crossed out and will be illuminated during take-off until the plane has reached a certain height in order to ensure there is no interference with mobile networks on the ground.

A spokesman for OnAir told ZDNet UK sister site, silicon.com: "After take-off, an announcement will be made that passengers are allowed to use their mobile phones. At this point the 'no mobile' sign will be turned off."

The new signs are currently only applicable to Airbus aircraft but OnAir said it hopes to have them on Boeing planes as well if the in-flight mobile service is extended to its aircraft in the future.

Boeing last month warned the financial markets it may take a $315m hit on the sale or closure of its own troubled in-flight broadband technology operation Connexion, which has struggled to take off.

Mobile phones don't interfere anyway, they are still testing in the US, but everything so far has come up negative.

Maybe, but it is still very blinking annoying when the person in the seat next to you is on the phone saying "We're about to leave now, I'll call ....blah blah..." SHUT UP:furious3: SHUT UP :furious3: :furious3: and the same person was on the phone just a few seconds earlier saying "We're about to board now" arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhhh !! :censored: :furious3: :furious3:

Just do what I do, tap them on the shoulder, take the phone off them, and explain to the person on the other end that the plane is about to crash because some :furious3: is using a mobile phone! :D

I'm really not in favor of using mobiles phones during flight.
It's nice to be quiet there!
Some are so noisy while speaking loud in their phones...

If mobile phones could bring down an airplane, does anybody really think they would even be allowed in the passenger compartment in the current terrorist hysteria?

:xxgrinning--00xx3:

Several years ago a plane crashed into a mountain in the Philippines, supposedly from interference caused by someone using a mobile phone. Several days later there was a splodge in the papers stating that a passenger on another flight had used her phone, been nearly lynched by the crabs on the plane, and fined $5000 by the cops!

Only in the Philippines.:doh

There were case of proved interference (and not only with mobile phones, but also other electronic equipments), the ones I'm thinking of were not in the Philippines. It can give problem particularly in autoland system (better to land on the runway than on the grass!).

The actual planes (and phones) must not give problem. The main problem of mobile phones is that they transmit at full power to try to connect to a ground cell (power is at 2 Watts). With the in-flight system, they are at the minimum (0.2 Watts) so few risk only.

Personally I would prefer the pilot hears the "go round" command from air traffic control, and not "du du du du, du du du du" of a mobile phone handshaking. (in 200+ flights I've only had a last second landing abort once, the plane before us hadn't cleared the runway, might of been ok but.....)

I read somewhere the problem is really with the routing, and concerns that mobile operators have with a system designed for a mobile that will be line of sight with only a "few" cells, at 10,000 meters you are in line of sight of a lot of masts. and 400 mobile phone moving at 600mph all taking/making phone calls may cause problems for them and other users. in-flight systems cleary don't have the same issues.

All well and good untill the inflight system breaks down and all the phones go searching for the cells back down on the ground. with many people carrying two phones (work and personal) thats up to about 600-800 phones possibly blasting the Flight crew equipment all at once.

In hindsight i was glad i could not call the Wife when i would fly to see her in Phill, otherwise i would have had a huge bill as i sat on the plane for 12- 15 hours a time with not much to do.

How the airlines would be able to sell that expensive satellite calls if they woudln't ban the mobiles?

How the airlines would be able to sell that expensive satellite calls if they woudln't ban the mobiles? As far as I know, it will be used first on short/medium flights (I.E. domestic or European flights) and not on overseas ones. So they will equip planes that do not use the satellite phones yet (the one without entertainement systems).
But, this system will also use ... satellites!:yikes:
