THE Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is set to build a new embassy building at the Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, the British Embassy announced on Wednesday.
Peter Beckingham, British ambassador to the Philippines, said they have bought a 1.2-hectare land in Taguig City from the land developer Megaworld Corp.
“We have concluded an agreement to [buy] land in McKinley Hill, Fort Bonifacio, and it has been approved by the Department of Foreign Affairs,” Beckingham said.
Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo welcomed the transaction and said the Philippine government welcomes the plans of the British government to construct a new chancery in Manila.
“We look forward to the further enhancement of our already dynamic bilateral relations as we work on developing new areas of mutually beneficial cooperation,” Romulo said.
Beckingham added that the purchase underlines the growing relationship between the two countries.
“Our decision to invest several million pounds in a new embassy building is a strong signal of our commitment to developing an ever closer relationship with the Philippines,” Beckingham said.
Beckingham disclosed that the investments are increasing and visa applications are at record levels, while more British tourists are coming to the Philippines.
“For all these reasons, and our close strategic interests, it makes sense for us to have our own purpose-built embassy,” he added.
McKinley Hill is envisioned as an international community that will host international schools, offices for global companies, high-end residential villas and condominiums and world-class amenities such as a community center, sports club and public park.
Construction work on developing the new site is likely to commence in January 2007, with a view to completion of the new building in early 2009.
