Malaysia to issue visas on arrival for tourists from 23 countries: reports
The Philippines Star - August 10, 2006 12:21:56 PM (Manila time)
KUALA LUMPUR (AP) - Tourists from 23 countries who currently need visas to enter Malaysia will be allowed to obtain them at the airport when they arrive starting Sept. 1, news reports said Thursday.
Tourists from the countries, including China, states in the former Soviet Union, India, Pakistan and Myanmar, will be issued a one-month, single-entry visa for 100 ringgit (US$27.40) when they arrive at any of five international airports, the New Straits Times and The Star newspapers reported.
Currently, citizens of those countries need to obtain visas before arriving in Malaysia.
Home Affairs Minister Radzi Sheikh Ahmad was quoted as saying the new arrangement is meant to boost visitor arrivals for the "Visit Malaysia 2007" tourism promotion.
"The idea is to encourage them to come straight to Malaysia, to spend their money here first, instead of neighboring countries," Radzi was quoted as saying.
Tourists from some other countries, including the United States, Southeast Asia, some Arab nations and some Commonwealth countries, don't need visas to enter Malaysia.
The new visa arrangement for tourists from the 23 nations will continue "as long as it doesn't threaten Malaysia's security," Radzi was quoted as saying. All visitors will be questioned by immigration officers to ensure the visa privilege isn't abused, he added.
Phone calls to Radzi's office went unanswered Thursday morning, and his two top aides were not reachable on their mobile phones.
Malaysia is aiming for a record 21 million arrivals under its "Visit Malaysia 2007" promotion.
Tourism is the Southeast Asian nation's second largest source of foreign exchange after exports. Last year, it brought in revenue of 30 billion ringgit (US$8 billion) from 15.7 million visitors. The government hopes to attract 17 million visitors this year.
