An average of one billion short messaging service (SMS) or text messages are now passing through the network of Smart Communications, an executive said.
"We now have the most powerful SMS network in the world," added Napoleon Nazareno, chief president and chief executive officer of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) and Smart.
This jump in volume of text messages in the country reflects the country's strong preference for SMS than voice for mobile communication.
In a briefing this week, Nazareno said the total number of mobile phone subscribers of the PLDT Group reached 22.5 million during the first six months of 2006.
Smart and Pilipino Telephone Corp.'s Talk 'N" Text are the mobile phone subsidiaries of PLDT.
Meanwhile, Globe Telecom's first half 2006 financial report showed that its total mobile phone subscribers reached hit 14 million.
This brings the total of mobile phone subscribers in the country close to 37 million.
Figures from the National Telecommunications Commission indicate that the Philippines has more than 30 million mobile phone subscribers as of 2005.
Executives from both Smart and Globe predicted that mobile phone subscriber growth is slowing down.
The current total number of mobile phone subscribers is more close to half of the country's population of about 85 million.
** Pinoys are too addicted in texting, text, text,!!thats why both of the network has have unlimited texts promo... more save eh:Erm: :Cuckoo: **
