FILIPINOS WISHING TO WORK IN MALAYSIA or the Netherlands should beware of unscrupulous recruiters who promise them jobs in the two countries but without the legal work documents, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration said yesterday.

POEA administrator Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said the agency continued to receive reports of unsuspecting applicants being promised immediate jobs in Malaysia without having to go through the POEA and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office.

“This is an old modus operandi. Although I have already issued several warnings in the past, the false promise of an easy way to work abroad in exchange for a big sum of money is still attractive,” Baldoz said.

She also warned those who want to work in the Netherlands not to do so on a tourist visa. Baldoz said that with the rising number of illegal immigrants in that country, the Dutch government is expected to implement tougher measures and heavier penalties against illegal immigrants.

According to Baldoz, the Malaysian government would soon issue identification cards with enhanced security features, such as thumbprints, to all foreign workers, as an answer to the various schemes of illegal recruiters.

Baldoz advised applicants wishing to work in Malaysia or the Netherlands to first check with the POEA if the individuals or the companies offering them jobs were licensed or not.
