Hi Guys, New Subject.

E Bookers.com Expedia.co.uk, and Flights4less.co.uk etc

Had a very nice chat today in Terminal 3 with one of the Ebookers.com customer advisors.

When you do a flight search on their websites, often fares come up, wich are fairly well discounted, one of the things the lady told me, is that, Ebookers.com and others, have a contract with the airlines, to sell a certain amount of seats, these seats are heavily discounted, for example.

Today I checked out a flight to Manila from London, on certain dates, when I checked the website this morning, the flight was listed at £510.00 including taxes, interestingly when I checked with the Airline direct at their own ticket desk, I found the same flight and seat was £220.00 more than that at Ebookers.

I then spoke to the airline reps who told me that seats at airports cannot be sold on heavily discounted rates, as this conflicts with their contractual obligations to Online Travel Agents, who take the seats at a discounted figure.

Then i found out, that certain Economy class seats, have certain fare categories, i.e. K Class, Y Class, these have certain restrictions..i.e. they are no refundable, instant fares, I did actually speak to Singapore Airlines also today, although they were not the airline I am talking about, the other airline was in fact Emirates.

Singapore Airlines, have their own special fares at present, I was told prior to today that Singapore Airlines special fares has ended at the end of April, however they are still doing the free onward return flight to Manila from Singapore.

However there are drawbacks, you cannot seem to get the dates you want, for example, the dates closest to the weekend, arriving back on a Sunday night never seems to be available, you always seem to have to fly, in the middle of the daytime, and arrive back, during the middle of the week.

For the sake of £20.00 its not worth taking dates you don't actually want, on this occasion I turned Singapore Airlines down, although I could have got an instant fare which was below £500.00 including taxes.

When I re-approached E Bookers..or Flight Bookers as they are also known, they have a booking plaza, near to the Heathrow Express Trains area, I confirmed exactly the same flight times, for example..I want to leave the UK preferably, on a Saturday evening, as the overnight flight, will get me a connection which will let me arrive on Sunday Evening, then an onward connection on PAL to my destination for Monday A.M. which is perfect.

Emirates were able to offer that too me, but could not sell me a ticket, as the price of that fare was £722.00 inc Taxes.

Then I took the Emirates print out, downstairs to E Bookers who happily gave me the same itinerary, for £507.00

A Saving of £215.00 nearly 30 per cent of the sheduled airline discounted fare.

Its a point worth noting, that the best fares, then therefore seem to be through Online travel agents, who have more clout, in the rates that can be offered, when I checked today, there were only 4 seats left in the K Class fare, Singapore Airlines also could offer me the dates I wanted, but only on a different class of Economy fare, that is £685.00 plus taxes, a total of £752.00.

Its just something to note for the future.

I found out the same when I searched for a flight to HK. Different on-line sellers will charge different prices at different times of the day for the same ticket. However, the cheaper the ticket, the more restrictions, as you quite rightly say.

My recent flight to HK on BA was an example of this. BA31 was priced at £540 on BA website, and £465 on travel4Less (part of lastminute.com). I spoke to travel4less about seat allocation, and they say that they get xx of seats on each flight. But evidently, they didnt get to sell many, as the flight out to HK was virtually empty in cattle class where I was - 4 seats to myself - luxury. However it was crammed full coming back.

You will find that all airlines own websites always charge more for seats, so its worth shopping around with Expedia and the like. I've also learned that the cheapest flights are those that have the most stopovers and the most restrictions, but if you can live with this, you will save a whole lot of money - this is what I did during many of my trips to Phils. I actually enjoy stopping over at different airports it breaks the monotomy of a long flight and you get to sample different airlines and aircraft types - I'm one of those sad gits who knows the difference between a L1011 and a DC10 and why the A340 is the best airplane ever made in history anyway.....back to reality..

Since I first used the Internet back in '96, I've always shopped around. I can't believe people still use the High Street rip-off shops, when you can plan each step of your holiday yourself.

I booked with Virging for our SIngapore trip in Jan, as it was the same flight, but £100 cheaper, however for last weeks trip, we booked through SIA as they had a special on that was £150 cheaper than Virgin!!! So it pays to shop around and not book through the same site.

Of course this is my point entirely, Intelligent agents on the Internet, such as Expedia.co.uk and Ebookers.com, or flights4less. (Lastminute.com) trawl the flights looking for price comparisons for you, to think that now we can do this from the comfort of our living rooms, who would have thought that even 10 years ago, intelligent agents, would be just another household appliance, the point I made was, is that getting the dates you want, at the times you want at the fare you want, is now made much easier, you can search, discard, and alter your flight plans, at the click of a button, and see what comes up, but as I have said in my previous post, it helps to know, what the marketing strategies are of the airlines, and how different classes of fare work, for example in Economy Class.

I spent over 3 hours trawling the net, looking at different intelligent search agents, but I now see the future, as for example, the online user, specifying the price they want to pay, and leaving your Pc running while you out for the day, and then allowing it to come back to you with 10 different options, including prices, seat allocation, where it is on the aircraft, hotels, cars, and suggested travel plans, intelligent agents, used by Expedia and Ebookers are only scratching the surface of what can be achieved, and what will be achieved over next 5 years.

Having said that, there is no toilet paper in the Gaisano City Shopping Mall. in Baclod City, and there is only a Tabo for washing out your backside...some things never change.

How did we get onto toilets!!!

One thing that does annoy me with some airlines, SIA included, is these bloody e-tickets. Out of the last 3 their has been a mistake on the wife's and as ot can't be changed it doe s cause a problem at the airport. This time it missed out a SPACE between her middle & last name so it appeared as one name.....doesn't match the passport exactly though does it B)

It also means her air miles aren't automatically updated, so now we have to go through the hassle of filling out a form and waiting 3 months.
