I just read this and thought i would let you read what just took place!!
We advise against all travel to central, southern and western Mindanao, and the Sulu archipelago including Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and Jolo, where there are ongoing military and police operations against insurgent groups. On 27 March 2006, an explosive device was detonated in Jolo Town. Reports indicate that at least nine people have been killed and 20 injured. You should take particular care and maintain high levels of vigilance when travelling to the rest of Mindanao, including Davao.

Hi John
I had similar reports before I went to Davao last July. I tell you , it makes getting travel insurance very difficult. I ended up getting insurance from Churchill after e-mailing them , and they only agreed to insure for normal travel problems, anything else and I was in soapy bubble.
I just treated being in Davao as I would have Belfast in the 70's and 80's. But at the end of the day anyone can be unlucky and get caught up in something. I know bombs went off in Davao airport a few years back.

It is better to have that sort of attitute Brian and i guess that is why i do not let things like that get to me coz of being brought up for years through the troubles over here.
I know of some who will not even go to Minanao coz of how dangerous parts of it can be and i understand why they do not go also but life is too short to let fear decide were we travel.
The first time i went to the Philippines i did not get any travel insurance and i ended up in a hospital there for 4 days which cost me around £130 which by our standards is very good. The last time i went i got insurance for around £70 and all went well but this time i have decided not to get any.
I would be curious to know what other members do in relation to getting Travel Insurance!!

Hmm, I think we need clarification from any travel insurance company about this. I always buy a annual policy with insure and go, and scanning through the tiny print, theres nothing about the Philippines. I even asked Insure and Go about the Philippines, and they said yeah no problem, but they are aware of FCO advise regarding terrorists and that I should be careful, blah blah. I suppose it could happen anywhere in the world - not just in the Philippines.
Brian, Churchill are correct in saying what they did, meaning that if you get involved or are caught up in war, invasion, acts of foreign enemy, civil war, revolution, insurrection, hostilities or war-like operation or any civil commotion, your not covered. But we can always fall back on our friendly British Embassy should this happen style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif ...

You need to be very careful with the insurance policy. Generally speaking, if the Home Office tell you not to go, then you do so at your own risk, the majority of off the sheld policies will not cover you.
The HO tell you not to go to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, and your normal Argos yearly insurance is INVALID if you do, so my guess it is the same for Mindanao, and any other place the HO have warnings for.
Insure and Go would not know the difference between Mindanao & Manilla!
