If Things Had Turned Out Differently ...

... I wouldn't be here now. How so?

Well ... for no particular reason ... a story my maternal grandfather once recounted to me - many years ago - came into my mind last night. And I thought I would share it with you all.

Apparently, he and some other lads had been playing "slidies" on an ice-covered pond near their home in the [ then ] Renfrewshire countryside. Remember this was back in the 1890s ... a time when northern winters really were absolutely ... and the ice was [usually] several inches thick!

Notwithstanding, (excuse the pun!) he must've trodden on a thinner patch and plunged through the crack into the frozen, murky depths below. Fearing his last moment had come - he told me his whole life seemed to "flash in front of his eyes" at that point - he was fortunate some of his mates had heard his yells " ... ...!!!" Next thing, he felt himself being yanked out by the shoulders. ... he'd certainly had a narrow escape from drowning that day.

As I've already mentioned, it's a l~o~o~ong time since my Grandpa Limpitlaw told me about this incident. Thankfully, for each member of the five generations since, he'd lived to tell the tale ... dying at the ripe old age of 97!!!!!!!

its funny u shud broach this subject arthur, earlier today i was talking with my wife and we started on the subject of our ancesters, then to my amazement we discovered that her spanish sir name came from a friar who sailed aboard the vessel with magellen when they discovered the philippines..

I can trace my family back to the 10th Century. We have a family coat of arms, including a king family member and the clans castle's from the 1600's, still stand in County Cork, Ireland. Beat that
