I guess the very first requirement is that you have both met each other face-to-face.

That's a good foundation on which to build. I'm sure you had lots of photos taken together when your b/f visited you. Keep the copies you have ... they will be needed when the time comes for your visa application. For the moment, however, I would suggest you consult the UK Border Agency website for details on how to apply for either a Fiancee or Spousal Visa.
