Bangkok to Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh?

I'm considering making the overland journey from Bangkok or Pattaya to Angkor (Siem Reap) and possibly Phnom Penh too if time permits. I'm aware that there are no trains running through this part of Thailand and Cambodia.

Has anyone got any experience of this trip? How easy is it to get direct buses from Bangkok or Pattaya, what is the cost for a tourist class sleeper bus and how long does it take?

    Thanks

Ian, the best info I have is that there are a number of Bus tours from Pattaya to Angkor from the local travel agents. Sorry but no helpful info on the prices.

From Bangkok there always used to be some flights.

    Thanks Terpe

I've done a bit of googling on this, and it looks as though it's approx 6 - 8 hours to Angkor and a further 6 hours to PP. Approx cost is 7 - 10 USD for a western standard AC bus, and most hotels in Bamgkok and Pattaya can organise tickets

Well.. I got a Bus from Bangkok to the border and then rather than taking the tourist bus... I paid 1USD and got a pickup truck to Swai (I think this is how you say it) and then got a knife pulled out on me and got a shared taxi to Angkor Wat....

This was about 6 years ago and it has changed a lot... planning to go back soon... it's a nice place.

I used to know a guy in Hong Kong Dom Chappell, early 90's?Back then Cambodia was a little different to nowadays,a few of us went, everyone used to say it was how Thailand was 15-20 years ago,one of the guys I first went with is still there and owns a thriving business,he has been there almost 20 years now?Anyway Dom Chappell and his girlfriend went to Sihanoukville, saw it had tourist potential as did Cambodia, they didnt have much cash but rented a building and turned it into a Pizza-place for backpackers, hadnt been there long when they went to PP to get supplies,a friend of theirs went with them, think she was aussie? They took a taxi, like I said things were different then, rough and ready, they were stopped, dragged from the taxi and marched into the jungle, girls were raped then all three were shot. There was another guy at the time, english geezer who bought an AK47 I never found out why except it was cheap, less than $100,he ended up doing 3 or 4 month in nick for that You used to be able to buy anti-personnel mines like B40's for a couple of dollars apiece from certain markets, strange place but it used to have a raw edge

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.
