i have read on here that some scanned copies have been used and been ok, but i guess the quality must have to be excellent so that the difference does not show, however i would think its a risk, if they should realise they are copies, they may reject the application

Hi,, my g/f was recently granted a six month general visa, all our documents submitted were original except for my passport and the land registery document for my house, these were photo copies. I feel you may have your application refused if you do not comply by sending original documents.... Best of Luck.

I was granted a tourist visa before using scanned documents from my husband. There's no guarantee that if you submit all original documents then you will get 100% chance to get visa approved. The ECO will decide base on the papers you submit. I was told that scanned copies are okay as long as its authentic and readable. However to minimize the risk of getting denied you might opted submitting one set of original and one set of photo copies.

I'm going to submit original copies except for my husband's passport and last bank statement.

I've had my wife's fiancé visa approved using entirely scanned copies too.
Although the guidance says originals should be used.

According to UKBA requirements most of the supporting documents should be originals.
However, they do allow certain documents to be electronic/scanned, and they do allow others to be certifed copies.

The UKBA info is not all in one location on their website.

However, here's what they say about bank statements:-

.Every personal bank or building society statement should clearly show:

your name or your sponsor's name
    the account number
    the date of the statement
the financial institution's name and logo
    transactions covering the recent period
that there are enough funds present in the account to support a dependent partner and any dependent children
If you want to send electronic bank statements from an online account, these must contain all of the details listed above. You will also need to send a supporting letter from your bank, on headed paper, confirming that the statements are genuine. Alternatively, electronic bank statements with the official stamp of the bank that issued the statements will be accepted. The stamp must appear on every page of the statement.

We will not accept statements that simply show the balance in the account on a particular day, as these documents do not show that there are consistent funds to meet the maintenance requirement..
You need to be sure with your documents.
Better to send originals where possible.

All of mine were originals except the non notarised copy of my passport, but my wife submitted my birth certificate in lieu of a notarised copy of my passport, we had been advised that it would be okay to do that. I think it is safer to comply with the UKBA specified requirement so that you give them no excuses for refusal.

On bank statements, i got Nationwide to authenticate by stamp and signature all of the duplicates i received from them. I only had one or two originals, you see. Again, we were advised to do this.
